The Special Intervention Group (GIS) is an elite department of the Carabinieri, qualified as a Special Force (TIER1),

together with the Col Moschin of the Army, the Comsubin Raiders Operational Group of the Navy and the 17th Wing of the Air Force.

The GIS has a dual nature: born in 1978 as an elite unit of law enforcement, in 2004 it was validated as a unit

special forces, prepared for all types of military action and high risk in international theaters.

The GIS is part of the second Mobile Carabinieri Brigade and operationally depends on the Joint Forces Command for operations

special forces. Its members, unlike the other Italian special forces, in addition to the status of raider,

they also have that of public security officer.

Since 2000 the department has operated and operates in various war theaters (Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq, Horn of Africa, etc.)

as well as in all countries where Italian diplomatic offices are most at risk.
